Sp/4 Ronald Anthony Spudis, who was killed in action on 11 December 1971 in Viet Nam, will be recognized for his bravery and sacrifice.  Former State Senator and now Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly announced that the Maryland Department of Transportation will name the Route 155 bridge over I-95 in honor of Sp/4 Spudis.

Ron Spudis was born in Havre de Grace 21 January 1950, the son of Albert and Jeanne Spudis and brother of Barbara Bullock.  He attended the John Carroll School and graduated in 1968.  He joined the U.S. Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Co. D, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division Republic of Vietnam.

Sp/4 Spudis was with an advanced patrol that came under fire.  In spite of his wounds, he kept up firing to allow the other men to move the wounded to safety.  He sacrificed his life for the other soldiers in his unit.  Sp/4 Spudis was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.  He had also been awarded a Bronze Star for Merit and the Air Medal.

This recognition was sought by retired State’s Attorney Joe Cassilly who was a high school classmate of Spudis and a Vietnam veteran.  The dedication was supported by former State Senator Bob Cassilly; Delegates Susan McComas, Steve Johnson, and former Delegate Maryann Lisanti; Havre de Grace Mayor Bill Martin; former Harford County Executive Barry Glassman, and Harford County Council President Patrick Vincenti.
